Something Bold, Something Blue: The Album Covers of Reid Miles

Contributed by Owen Schumacher

Stop and think of a great jazz album cover. There's a good chance it was designed by Reid Miles, Blue Note Records' preeminent go-to guy during the heyday of '50s and '60s hard bop. John Coltrane, Grant Green, Thelonious Monk—you name him, he covered him. Reid lent his trademark style to all the titans of jazz, making almost 500 Blue Note record sleeves in total. Thankfully, much of his timeless work was compiled in a single volume, Blue Note: Album Cover Art, [2002]. If ever you forget what real design looks like, come back to this.
